The New Forest

Paultons Theme Park is located on the very edge of the stunning New Forest National Park. Should you wish to continue your Paultons Break for longer than just your stay at Paultons Theme Park then the 571 square km of the New Forest offers plenty of fun family activities!

The New Forest is a national park mainly occupying land in Hampshire. Created as a royal forest way back in 1079 by William the Conqueror, the New Forest was first recorded as the Nova Foresta in the Domesday Book in 1086. The forest was also site of a suspicious hunting accident which killed William's successor, William Rufus, in 1100, the site of his death is still marked by a memorial stone.

Today around ninety per cent of the New Forest is still owned by the Crown and about half of the Crown lands lie within the new National Park boundary.

As well as providing an incredible visual and historic landscape, the New Forest is an important habitat for a diverse range of trees, plants and animals. While the New Forest covers an area of over 570 square km, that area is contains a diverse range of types of woodland and heaths:

  • 146 square km of broadleaf woodland
  • 118 square km of heathland and grassland
  • 33 square km of wet heathland
  • 84 square km of tree plantations
  • The park's wildlife includes the only cicada native to Great Britain, three species of snake and many different species of birds. Deer are also numerous within the forest. However, they are shy and tend to stay out of sight of humans, so you'll be very lucky to see one!
